 Clarke: Backs new scheme |
Charles Clarke has thrown his weight behind TUC plans for a union academy for working people. The proposal aims to give people access to learning when it is convenient for them with academy-commissioned courses from colleges and universities.
The academy would be owned and run by unions which "aim to transform access to learning for people at work".
According to the TUC employers lose around 10bn a year through "poor basic skills in the workforce".
Wealth creators?
Education Secretary Mr Clarke addressed union delegates at the annual TUC conference in Brighton on Tuesday when he stated his backing .
He said the academy had the potential to raise the hopes and ambitions of thousands of workers previously failed by education and training.
TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said: "A better-educated workforce is fundamental to the drive for a move productive society and better jobs.
"Educated skilled workers create more wealth, provide better services and make a fuller contribution to the nation's prosperity.
"This helps them make better equipped to make decisions and cope with the rapid pace of global economic change."
