Bob Bird of the tabloid described the jury's verdict as "perverse" |
The News of the World has launched an appeal after a jury awarded Tommy Sheridan 200,000 in damages in his defamation case against the tabloid. The appeal was lodged with the Court of Session in Edinburgh but has yet to be formally accepted.
Mr Sheridan won his case against the newspaper after it published a series of allegations about the Socialist MSP's sex life.
The News of the World described the jury's decision as "perverse".
After his victory, Mr Sheridan said: "The working class people on the jury have done a service to the people of Scotland."
But Bob Bird, editor of the News of the World in Scotland, said: "This result suggests that 18 independent witnesses came to this court and committed monstrous acts of perjury.
"We simply cannot accept that is what happened."
