The airport reopened less than two days after the attack

Figures from operator BAA Scotland showed that 869,305 passengers used the airport in August - almost 5,000 more than in the same month last year.

In total, more than 21 million people passed through Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow airports in the last 12 months.

International passengers increased by almost 10% in the same period. Edinburgh Airport was the busiest.

Previous figures released by BAA Scotland showed passenger numbers at Glasgow Airport dipped slightly in the aftermath of the attack on 30 June.

The airport operator said August was a particularly good month for Glasgow's most popular long haul routes, with Dubai, New York, Philadelphia, Vancouver and Calgary performing strongly.

At Edinburgh, international traffic grew by more than 22% compared with August last year, due to the increasing popularity of the city's festivals.

Aberdeen Airport remained BAA's fastest growing UK airport with 316,248 passengers in the same month - an increase of 13% on the previous year.

Overall, there was a rise in passenger numbers of 6.3% at all three airports.

Gordon Dewar, managing director of Glasgow Airport, said August's passenger boost supported the results of a recent survey which showed that the vast majority of travellers had not been put off flying by the attack.

He said: "The past few months have been particularly challenging, and it remains to be seen if the failed attack on the airport will have a long term impact on visitor numbers.

"However, in the year to August, Glasgow Airport handled more than 8.8 million passengers, including more than 900,000 long haul travellers."

Stephen Baxter, chairman of BAA Scotland, welcomed the strong performance of Scotland's international routes.

He said: "Over the past year, BAA Scotland has invested more than �20m in support of new and expanding airlines.
