Drop in passengers after attack
Glasgow Airport entrance
The airport reopened less than two days after the attack
Glasgow Airport was the busiest in Scotland last month, despite a drop in passengers after the failed terrorist attack on the main terminal.

Figures released by the British Airports Authority showed passenger numbers at the airport dipped slightly in the aftermath of the 30 June attack.

The day of the attack was expected to be one of the busiest of the month but it only handled 19,428 passengers.

A total of 37,898 passengers had passed through the airport the previous day.

BAA said the forced closure on the day of the attempted bombing led to Glasgow's passenger traffic for the month of June dropping to 869,930, down 2.4% on last year.

We have planned carefully for this busy summer period and worked hard to ensure that we can cope with large numbers of passengers

However it said the full impact of the attack would only be revealed when passenger numbers for the month of July were released.

Figures for the first six months of the year showed the airport handled 8.9 million passengers - a rise of 0.5% on the previous year.

Overall figures for all three of Scotland's main airports - Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen - hit the two million mark in June for the first time ever.

Edinburgh Airport also set a new record for the most passengers travelling through the terminal in one day.

The airport handled a total of 35,782 passengers the day before the attempted terrorist attack, breaking its previous record by 800.

In the year to June a total of 8.8 million passengers passed through the airport, a rise of 2.6% on the same period in the previous year.

'Busy summer'

A 2.5m investment in security has already seen 36 additional security officers, four extra x-ray machines and the opening of a brand new security search area at the airport for the summer period.

David Johnston, managing director, said: "We have planned carefully for this busy summer period and worked hard to ensure that we can cope with large numbers of passengers."

Meanwhile at Aberdeen Airpoprt, passenger numbers in June grew by 7.5% to 307,898.

International traffic at the airport was also up by 20.9%.

Stephen Baxter, divisional manager of BAA Scotland, said: "Half way through the year, international traffic growth currently stands at 12% which shows that our policy of investing in new direct links from Scotland is paying off."
