This is something I have believed for many years should happen - and I have no personal ties to the Holocaust except that I am a human being. Additionally, Mr Cameron would do well to think adequately about his words before he makes public announcements. We have Gordon Brown and the rest of the cabinet already there to make plenty of laughable mistakes - we need no one else to join in!
P Child, England

I have been to Dachau about 9 years ago, when I was 57 and wish I had been years ago to understand what happened. Why is it that politicians shoot themselves in the foot on occasions such as these, I wish a lot more of our kids could go to understand the cruelness in this world. We have let the Jewish nation down ever since the Balfour declaration, how can we ever understand them if we do not understand what their nation have gone through. How many Jews were turned back from Palestine by our forefathers only to suffer later death in these camps? This time was not a proud moment for our Royal Navy acting under the orders of the government at the time.
Ernie, Bedford

The horrors of such camps used to commit atrocities so disgusting are nothing new to humankind. One has only to read the bible or any account of invasions by one set of people on another's territory to realise this kind of behaviour must be wired into our psyche. It makes one despair for our kind. God knows why we do it.
Thomas Briggs-Bradford, England

Having visited there last year with my father. I think its good the students of today learn about the horrific things that went on. I do not think it is a gimmick at all. Its history that should not be forgotten, we do not forget the fallen of both world wars lets not forget what these poor people suffered. Robert has described his visit and as I was reading through, I could picture everything he mentioned. It would be good to see more funding to send more students.
Mark Trudgill, England

Yes, the holocaust was bad but sending two kids from each school to Auschwitz is a gimmick, a pointless waste of time and money and a worthless tick in the "tackling racism" box.
Nick Stutley, UK

My personal opinion is that this demonstrates how out of touch David Cameron is, and why he should never be Prime Minister. There is no better way to understand the impact that the holocaust had than by visiting concentration camps, especially in a world where genocide is still such a major issue. I myself visited Dachau on an A level History trip and no matter how hard teachers try, there is nothing that can enable a person truly to engage with this issue than the experience of standing in the place where these horrific events took place. It is sobering, emotional and thought provoking.
Rachel Silverson, UK
