The Cebit trade fair is taking place in Hanover. Billed as the world's largest technology show, the event will run until Wednesday. Here a visitor gets to grips with a Hitachi digital camcorder which records directly on to DVD. Nokia's N92 is a mobile phone with a difference - a screen which enables the user to watch digital TV. Cebit also saw the unveiling of Microsoft's new UMPC, a handheld computer which uses the Windows operating system, and made by Samsung. The device had been dubbed Project Origami by Microsoft, and is being touted as a competitor for music and video devices such as the iPod. Panasonic unveiled a 103-inch plasma-screen TV. More than 6300 exhibitors from 71 countries have taken part in this year's event. A man watches a wall of TV flatscreens. Last year Cebit attracted 500,000 people, and more were expected this year. Some companies - built giant mockups of their new products, such as this one of a ViaMichelin car navigation device. Dutch company ego unveiled laptops with a difference - available in a variety of handbag-shaped covers. Dr Erich Schneider models a new video camera system used for surgery. The footage can then be used for training or for other doctors to study.
