Blown tree kills couple on road
A man and woman died on Saturday afternoon when strong gales blew a tree on to their car.

The accident took place at about 1630 GMT on the A12 at Blundeston, near Lowestoft in Suffolk.

Police said the beech tree, which was deemed by a tree expert to have been in good condition prior to toppling, weighed several tons.

It fell on the couple's Rover hatchback. The victims have not yet been named by police.

Suffolk Police said they took 260 calls over a four-hour period on Saturday relating to the bad weather.

They warned motorists to be wary as gales are forecast for the remainder of the weekend.

A number of trees and electricity cables were brought down in the gales and EDF energy said about 5,000 homes were temporarily left without power.

The Orwell bridge in Ipswich was also closed for part of the day on Saturday because the gusting winds were too strong to allow motorists to drive safely across it.
