Over 100,000 people watched the 2004 march in Brighton |
Off-duty police officers who wore their uniforms for the Gay Pride march in Brighton received a positive response, the Gay Police Association (GPA) said. Officers from Sussex Police, marching in uniforms for the first time, led the procession of over 60 floats in front of 100,000 people on Saturday.
A GPA spokesman said the crowd responded well to their presence.
A liaison officer who marched said they received a "fantastic response and applause" during the event.
'Continued support'
Sussex Police also had a stand at Pride and said a number of people expressed an interest in becoming Community Support Officers.
An initiative called True Vision, which allows people to report homophobic or transphobic attacks by filling in a form at home, was also said to be well received.
A GPA spokesman said: "By marching in uniform and speaking to the community during the course of the day, we have showed our continued support towards building on the confidence the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual community has in Sussex Police."
Officers were given permission to wear uniforms to the 2003 event but marched in GPA t-shirts.
Officers policing the event said it was a successful day with only a few criminal incidents.
