Ramblers say they are angry at plans which could see some footpaths closed in Rotherham.
The borough council is applying to the government to have five paths designated as high crime areas
This follows complaints by local residents.
If the government agrees, the paths could be closed permanently.
But the Ramblers' Association says it has not been consulted and fears any closures would set a dangerous precedent.
Jack Burling from the association told BBC Radio Sheffield: "These paths are precious and were often hard fought for.
"We don't want by the stroke of an administrative pen to have them taken away."
