Families' DIY housing solution
Three families in south Shropshire are celebrating after being given the go-ahead to build themselves homes in their villages.

South Shropshire District Council's Planning Committee said the approvals are the first of their kind to be granted in the country.

The planning permissions were made as a result of the council's planning policies for affordable housing.

These are aimed at helping people who have been priced out of the housing market in areas where they have grown up.

It allows them to build affordable homes so they can stay in the area.

Council leader Heather Kidd said: "Local needs affordable housing is the top priority for the council.

"I am delighted to see the policy delivered to people in south Shropshire."

Sarah Lewis, whose family is one of those benefiting from the planning permission, said: "We are very pleased to be able to build ourselves a home in an area where we were brought up.

"We could not be happier. It will be great for the kids."
