Free school transport faces cuts
A raft of proposed cuts to free school transport has been drawn up to tackle a feared 220,000 budget overspend.

Oxfordshire County Council said if it does not make cuts it will go over this year's 14.1m transport budget.

The cuts could see the end of free transport to faith schools and free travel for non-Oxfordshire residents to Chiltern Edge School.

There could also be a new charge introduced for special educational needs students aged over 16.

No decision made

Full consultation will be carried out on the various options to be considered.

Councillor Louise Chapman, the council's cabinet member for children, said: "We want to gain as much feedback as possible from schools and parents on this matter.

"No decisions have been taken for or against the options under consideration and at this stage we are just looking to consult and to find out everyone's views."

The county council currently provides either free or subsidised transport to more than 12,000 youngsters.
