Troubled church stops services
Syringes
The grounds have been littered with syringes
A Nottingham church which has become a gathering place for drug addicts and homeless people will no longer hold religious services.

After 145 years the congregation at St Matthias church in St Ann's is having to find another place of worship as there is no vicar to preach.

Members of the congregation at St Matthias church have been battling to save it for over a year.

But dwindling numbers and problems finding a replacement for retiring vicar Reverend Rodney Smith has meant the Southwell Diocese shutting the doors.

The grade II listed building and surrounding grounds have been badly vandalised.

Windows have been smashed, security fences pulled down and the vicarage is littered with used syringes.

The long term future of the church still remains in the balance - an announcement is yet to be made by the Church Commissioners as to whether to declare the building redundant and close it for good.
