More then 2,000 people are employed at Brough |
Up to 700 aerospace workers are lobbying parliament in a bid to pressure the government over a 10bn military contract. The BAE Systems employees from the Brough factory in East Yorkshire fear hundreds of skilled jobs will be lost if the company is not awarded the Hawk Trainer Jet contract soon.
Derek Simpson, joint general secretary of manufacturing union Amicus, said the company had invested millions of pounds developing the site and urged the government to make a decision as soon as possible.
Union leaders said 1,000 jobs had already been lost at Brough in the past year and more would follow if the government decided to open up the contract to international competition.
"No delay"
Mr Simpson said: "Around 2,800 skilled workers in Yorkshire are depending on the government making the right decision, and quickly.
"BAE has spent 30m investing in developing Brough's capabilities to build the Hawk in what is a critical time for the company.
"It is a system that the RAF wants and if the future of Brough is to be assured there can be no further delay."
Keith Hazlewood, national secretary of the GMB union, said: "It is important that the order is awarded to Brough, not only for UK manufacturing but also for the local community."
