Mr Sheikh pleaded as to why he was being targeted before being shot |
A man who was shot dead in a city street begged for mercy as he lay on the ground seconds before he died, police said. Nureni Mumin Sheikh was shot twice in the Moss Side area of Manchester on Saturday afternoon.
Mr Sheikh, from Manor Park, London, had been at an engagement party at a nearby mosque shortly before he was shot.
On Wednesday Greater Manchester Police said they were still trying to establish a motive for the killing, as they released a picture of Mr Sheikh.
Emergency crews were called after Mr Sheikh was shot outside the Zaku Cafe in Claremont Road, at about 1730 GMT.
Tussle broke out
He was taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary but died shortly after arrival.
Detective Superintendent Mike Whiting said two men were involved, one of whom was carrying a gun.
"The gunman pointed the gun at Nureni and then grabbed hold of him," he told BBC GMR.
"There was then a tussle between them that caused him to go to the ground.
"Whilst on the ground Nureni was pleading as to why this was happening to him and why he was being targeted.
Balaclava-clad
"Then whilst that was taking place Nureni was shot. He was shot whilst on the ground, pleading and trying to get up."
Detectives said there was nothing in Somalia-born Mr Sheikh's background to suggest he had links with gangs in the area or of any criminal activity.
Both suspects involved are black or of mixed race and about 5ft 10ins tall.
They were wearing balaclavas and gloves at the time of the shooting and left the scene on foot.
