The new look Eagle Centre
Most big city centres these days are overflowing with plazas, shopping parades and malls. Derby's Eagle Centre is marginal when you compare it to other East Midlands shopping options and that's one of the reasons why it's getting a make-over!
Where is it?
The £300 million redevelopment scheme will completely regenerate the southern part of Derby city centre, bringing with it 732, 000 square feet of new retail space and an estimated 2,850 jobs.
What will it change?
The new centre will house over 100 new shops, a food court that will be capable of seating 800 people and an additional 2,000 parking spaces.
London Road will also be getting a face lift, with the introduction of additional shops and cafes, wider pavements and outdoor seating.
Traffic Street will be widened to provide additional bus lanes and a new pedestrian crossing will be put in place to improve links to the railway station.
A new shop mobility facility will also be added, making the new Eagle centre accessible to everyone.
What will it look like?
Use the 'New look Eagle Centre' link on the right of this page to see artist's impressions of the project.
When will it happen?
Planning permission for the site was achieved in September 2003 and advanced works started late last year. Because of the scale of the project, it is anticipated that the new centre will open in phases, the first of which will be winter 2007/spring 2008.
How can I find out more?

it,s great news, lets hope it,s as good as meadowhall, the free parking there is a good pull in, lets hope derby do the same
K
I think the partial closedown of the centre has been really badly planned and that the eagle centre managers need to wake up. The builders doss about all day, take up too much space and annoy everyone. i should know. I work there!
Kate
I'm definitely looking forward to this! But please bring Primark back! And yes, more boutiques and an H&M would be brilliant! I live in Ilkeston and have had to shop in Notts more than Derby due to there being more choice but hopefully this will change that, as I've always preferred going to Derby.
sean
Looking great and i was just wondering if it will still be called eagle centre, could we not change the name, eagle plaza or eagle pride shopping mall or something because you can tell alot in a name and i think eagle centre is out dated just a thought for westfield.
LK
I hope we dont have any more chavy shops and get more ted baker and firetrap and stuff. i think this place will be brilliant!! :D
mims
I have noticed that the spanidh retailer Bershka will have a place in teh new eagle centre! fantastic news!! being as it will be the third shop in the country!
kingsley
i dont live in derby but regularly visit for the shops but i am very disappointed that primark has gone we have one in the town where i live but the choice in derby was much better and i can not understand why they would get rid of a store that was always so busy and must of pulled people in from surrounding areas.BRING BACK PRIMARK
kersha
cant wait to see the new look. i think its will help derby for people with jobs, shopping puporses as well as being a huge tourist attraction!!
JK
It's about time the Eagle Centre is re-developed. The previous Main Centre and Coliseum areas were rundown, fragmented and built to a poor design. The new shopping centre will vastly improve shopping in Derby City Centre and hopefully provide a catalyst for other retailers to locate in Derby. ie House of Fraser and John Lewis.
Sally
Previous comments are true - getting rid of Primark was a bad move. And alternative stores? Yes please!
tom wilks
I think this will certainly attract a huge range of customers - i would love to see our city become the shopping capital of the East Midlands, towering over Nottingham, Leicesterand Northampton.
Sarah
Derby really needs more shops! Especially Jane Norman, H & M, Primark (getting rid was a BIG mistake!) & a House of Fraser
joy
i think its goin 2 b great but i think u beter get a move on cus i cnt wait all my friends are desperate to come down shoping with me from manchester and i think you would get a lot more customers if you wer to have good brand shops but also i think you should get primark back because my mum used to go there fo most of her clothes buut now she cant cus its gone!
Emma
i think the new eagle centre will be good and i will enjoy shopping there
kelly smith from chaddesden derbyshire
wow it looks fantatsic i cant wait for it to be built at least it will have more facilites and better things there
paydn holler
it looks great and hope we get some more sports shops
Tamsyn
This will be the most modern building in Derby. We deffinetly need it, Derby looks run down at the moment. I cant be bothered to go into Derby shoppin some days but it will make me want to go more.
lucy winfield
i think the new eagle centre will look great with a wider range of shops i will def be going there over 3 or 4 times a week i wont be able to keep away!!!!
jona
its only taken like 20 years to make somethin decent in derby
scott
I don't live in Derby, but I do come to Derby quite regularly and this looks like the Eagle Centre will attract shoppers and visitors from around the whole East Midlands if not the country.
Anna
It does look good and I will look forward to it but I am gutted that Westfield got rid of Primark and do hope to see its return very soon. I know have to travel to Birmingham to go to Primark as the Burton store is too small cpmpared to the one Derby had. So if you want to attract customers to Westfields Eagle centre and NOT drive them away then get Primark back, please. Trust me it is a BIG selling point.
mark walsh
the wife wanted me to take her to this place do dothe xmass shopping.but since they have banned selling and wearing poppies.idont think we will bother
Manpreet
I Can't see why peeps r bein so negative! y compare it 2 nottingham! Derby will get there 2 hopefully! It is a big step. Westfield looks really amazin but i dont like da way half da old eagle centres shops r closin down. What we gonna do before 2007??
aleem
u should build a cinema with asian films and u wil the best
some1 hu lives in derby :0)
i think it looks really great but there will only be really expensive shops the prices will be high so will the car parks and like in the bull ring it will be big spacious and look good but there will be hardly any shops. so there are very good points but quite a few bad points and bring back primark westfield what are you doing tacking it away everyone loves primark and its not cheap and tacky
natasha
i think this is a great idea it will giv all the women time to shop wen they need theropy and it will be good to hav more designer shops in derby as our town now is boaring
aleem
i live in normanton near the town center i cant wait until all town center is done its gonna be wicked and excitting i think derby gonna have one of the best town looks in the uk and i think its gonna be one the biggest town center in uk
carrie-ann
it looks fab, no need to go to nottingham, if it will be as good, i hope we get given craft shops such as hobby craft and lakeland, as well as the little ones we have it will be soooo good
Dee
Looks very nice.
Mike
Maybe a big department store like the House of Fraser can go in Debenhams current location on Victoria Street
sean
has anyone looked at what is happening in notts and in places like leeds and manchester and newcastle,we are really getting left behind people we need more hotel,s more apt,s more new build why do we not have a building 15 or 20 storey,s high over looking the river all lit up at night so you could see it from far away...the eagle centre is a start lets see what happens.p.s. will it still be called the eagle centre or could we not vote to change it..just a thought.
Foy
I agree with Leanne and Kast, we need more alternative stores! We have purple Haze but thats a little on the trendy side anyway. We need to have some smaller shop spaces in there that Westwood doesn't feel the need to rip shop owners off with and that even the smaller companies with less than 50 stores in the UK can afford. Something like Void in Nottingham!
joshuafarrell
aresome the bestever i am going on monday so see you there
Jack
Its good for Derby, as the whole centre needs a facelift, at the moment the whole city seems to be stuck in 1975...
Mrs I Brien
I have read in the Derby Evening Telegraph tonight that we are to have yet more small boutiques in the new shopping mall. When are we going to have major stores such as John Lewis and House of Fraser so that we don't have to shop in Nottingham for some decent Dept Stores. Yes we have Debenhams but this is mostly made us of shops within shops in the fashion area. Come on Westfield get us a major store. Iris Brien
Kast
Excellent! Can't wait. And I really hope they get permission for that cinema. I'm a student at JWC and go in ever Saturday so I'm gonna be making the most of it all. And, hopefully, they'll be a load of part-time jobs going so good times all around. Oh, and by the way, I second what Leanne said. GOTH SHOPS PLEASE!!
Loz
i know all about this new project. Mi mum works with westfield. Its gna b wiked evri1 n probabli better than the nottingham one! cnt wait til its finished!
leanne
dudes, i live in derby, i go to city centre nearly every few days, it ent gonna turn out like that, if it is, THERE'S HARDLY GONNA BE ANY GOTHIC SHOPS 4 US GOTHS! PUT SOME IN FOR GOD'S SAKE!
Shamus

John Samantha

Naomi Coleman
I think you should have a interactive look in on the new Eagle Centre and is that what it is going to be called? will there be an underground part? and why open in the winter, for Christmas?!? I have a lot more comments like this one.
patrick
we need taller buildings, 20 storey + thats what real cities have
xx
Nottingham may have a big shopping centre as big as "The Bullring" but Derbys will attrct every1s attention and bcuz ppl have already been shoppin in Notts they can c how brilliant Derbys new Egal Centre will b!
Dominik
It's nothing compared to Nottingham's future Broadmarsh Centre. Nottingham's new Broadmarsh will equal the Bullring in Birmingham for size & facilities whereas on close inspection, the Eagle Centre will be a poor relation. Nevertheless, still an improvement for Derby.
Lizzie
Yep, looks great - it will make Derby look a lot cleaner and more wealthy. It's a really cool design too!
Emily J
I luv shoppin and cant wait til the new center opens!!!!! :)
Hana Iqbal
I think that the new derby town centre plan is a very big project and i think it will do really well. the new look of derby is fabulous!
Rod
A small step in the right direction.
Adam
I agree, i think it looks amazing, and cant wait for it to be all finished, Its what derby needs, something to attract people, and by the looks of it this is only the start :-)
C. J.
In response to John Church I would like to say that the reason Meadowhall gets so busy is because the retail facilities around Derby are not really that great and do not offer the choice compared with somewhere as big as Meadowhall. I think this new development looks great!
dave coop
Looks awesome.....hope there'll be some good butty shops!!
Phil - RICS
Congratulations John Church for being the First negative on the message boards regarding Derby's regeneration. Meadow Hall is not in Sheffield City Centre and therefore to attract people it has to have free parking. Congestion is normally the weekends before the Christmas shopping rush etc which starts in September. It does not have the infrastructre of a City centre at that site. It is poorly served by public transport so cars are the main transport to the centre. It is a in regeneration area that has replaced the old Steel Mills and has been designed for a catchment far greater than any other Midlands Shopping Centre and not necessarily for Sheffield alone. The infrastructe already in place in Derby City Centre and the additional parking will absorb the extra traffic. Do not forget that with the Riverlights providing a safer and more attractive gateway via the new bus station to the City by public transport more people will use this option. Derby needs to go forward..What do you propose as an alternative or are you just typical of the negative approach people seem to have in Derby.

Meadow Hall is 1.3mill sq feet of retail, has 13000 FREE! parking spaces and still gets tail backs at peak periods. Eagle Centre will be close to 1mill sq feet with approx 4500 paid spaces. The traffic chaos will be enormous
sean
need to get riverlights up and going and use more of the riverside and a 5 star hotel along the river would not go a miss, derby needs to move on bring in more money and jobs....
