Fans and players celebrate victory |
Mathare United football club began life as a youth football association in one of the poorest slums in the Kenyan capital Nairobi.
The club draws it's ethnically diverse members from some of the most deprived areas in Kenyan society. In early 2008 Mathare Valley was the site of vicious fighting in Kenya's chaotic post-election conflict.
Despite this the club has continued to thrive, rising to the top of the Kenyan football league. For Assignment, David Goldblatt travels to Nairobi to chart the rise of the club.
First broadcast in January 2008
