 | Dear What’s the Problem
I am a dedicated, conscientious student who unfortunately freezes up when it comes to exam time. I’m certain I have failed papers because of this. I’m in danger of not getting the degree I think I deserve. What can I do?
Andrew, Singapore.
Advice: Vickey Ridley - phytotherapist (a practitioner in herbal medicine)
There is a group of herbs, known as “nervines”, which are relaxants, and they can help. If you are feeling panicked or thoughts are rushing around in your mind then valerian, lemon balm and chamomile may help. They do not prevent your mind from being sharp or recalling facts. A herb from Polynesia called cava cava is great for calming down anxiety and allowing the user to focus. A group of herbs, known as adaptogens, help the body at times of stress, especially when the adrenal glands are working overtime. A good adaptogen is Siberian Ginseng. Most societies use herbs for medicinal purposes. I’m sure Andrew will be able to find a herbal treatment which is local to him.
Advice: Susie Hayman (Agony Aunt)
Andrew could get advice from his teacher about this problem but he could also reproduce an examination situation at home so he is not so panicked when he sits his exams at college. He could also speak to a herbalist or a doctor about breathing techniques. These are very effective in helping you stay calm and focussed.

*Take a deep breath before you start.
*Read the paper through, before deciding which questions to answer.
*Start with an answer you are confident about.
*In your mind, repeat "I am calm and relaxed" or "I know I will do fine".
*If your mind goes blank, don't panic! Panicking will just make it harder to recall information.
*Instead, focus on slow, deep breathing for about one minute.
*If you still can't remember the information, move on to another question and return to this question later.
*If you are worried about how you did talk to someone, such as a friend or tutor, don’t bottle things up.
Relax!
