The New York Times has reported that 50 alleged Afghan drug traffickers with suspected ties to the Taliban have been placed on a Pentagon list of people to be captured or killed.

The paper quotes a report, due to be released this week, by the Senate foreign relations committee and says the move is part of a new American plan to disrupt the flow of drug money to the Taliban.

The New York Times says some Nato allies have raised concerns about the policy, but that two American generals told Congress it was legal under the military's rules of engagement and international law.
