Teachers in Perspective

Ghanaian teachers
"Despite the conditions, we try to give the students the best." Says Beatrice Oduro Acheampong , Head teacher at Service Basic school (right)

The number of teachers leaving the profession or jetting out of Africa in search of greener pastures has reached alarming levels.

With a shortfall of 30 million tutors and a declining profile, there is concern that Africa will not meet the target of education for all by 2015.

With many unhappy teachers and only a third of the teachers it needs, Ghana's public education sector is stretched and struggling.

African Perspective investigates the plight of teachers in Ghana and reveals why many are shunning the noble profession and its impact on learning in public schools.
