One man key to the upcoming independence anniversary is the man who led the country out of British rule on March 6th 1957, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

He was deposed by a coup nine years later and his legacy within Ghana is controversial with memories of his time at the helm dredging up memories, good and bad.

His image does appear on the official celebration posters and clips from his speeches are being broadcast on the radio but there is some official reluctance to embrace him wholeheartedly.

Beyond Ghana

Though not wholly appreciated in his own country, elsewhere on the continent Nkrumah is credited with more.

In neighbouring Nigeria, his political philosophies made a big impact, as political analyst Dr Akin Akingba explained to Sola Odunfa.

South Africa

At the Kara Heritage Institute in South Africa, researchers are concerned with the dissemination and discussion of traditional African knowledge. Dr Mathole Motshekga is the director of the institute, he told Bola Mosuro what Nkrumah and Ghanaian independence means to him.

Egypt

	Links between Ghana and Egypt were strong in the 1960s

Zamalek, a well-to-do area of Cairo, is the home of the Egyptian Africa Society which in the 1960s, was a magnet for African revolutionaries.

Kwame Nkrumah and Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser were friends and the links between the two countries were strong as the two men shared dreams of a liberated and unified Africa; and Nkrumah married an Egyptian.
