what we call grammar is just the rules which general public accepts. I will definitely select accuracy because. Still now, the grammar taught in school is the most widely accetable Perhaps later on, what is called fluency or slangs will be parts of our offiicial grammar

With both fluency and accuracy, language can function fully in communications. Fluency gathers and organises audience's attention while accuracy enables the speech or writing to carry what the speaker or writer wants to say. Ideally we need both. But, I think accuracy seems more essential. Think of a speaker who speaks erroneous gibberish very fluently! At least I think I can understand what accurate but hesitant speakers say. IMO, beginners should concentrate on accuracy when they learn. And intermediate learners should try to acquire fluency. And then advanced users can try to be both accurate and fluent in speaking and writing.

For me, English is not only the language to communicate with native English speakers, but also to communicate with people who don't speak Japanese (as you can tell, I'm a Japanese). When it comes to communicating with native English speakers, I think fluency would play a big role. But in communicating with non-native English speakers, I think accuracy could be more helpful, for enjoying conversation. :)

Youngmin Kim, South Korea
This topics are very useful for me because I was sometimes confused about these usage. In my opinion, accuracy is important, but fluency is more important than accuracy because we couldn't improve English if we stick to only accuracy. This is my little experience! Specially My English is still strict about gramatical accuracy.

RaMeSh, India
Fluency or Accuracy. Both of them is important. But Accuracy leads the race in this. If we are good in accuracy automatically fluency comes. Accuracy with fluency and accent makes a speech a elegant, stylish mannerReally its a gud topic.

Hello everybody there,I'm so glad to join this pretty club to improve my English for better especially in different fields of the skills of English language. you know, Fluency and accuracy make the hearer of English doesn't misunderstand the speech or such a conversation, but never forget it's perhaps a quite difficult for students who studies English as a foreign language or a second!I'm so pleased to join you and I will really have a great benefit. That's all for me...

First i would like to thank the BBC LE teachers for their geat job, secondly i have been learning english for along time with out improving much , then i found BBC LE ,really i've improved much since i visited this website. Finally i personally think that both of the accuracy and fluency is very important,i hope some day i will be fluenty in english.

Hoa Nguyen, Vietnam
To my opinion, both of them are necessary to become a good English spoken. First of all, i think fluency is more important. But after a while, i recognize if i talk with a great fluency but a lot of mistakes, people might laugh behind my back, especially in business or formal conversation. So, in conclusion, i think we should keep calm down ourselves, talk with a normal or quite low fluency, but make sure that you know exactly what you say.

Kim, Viet Nam
First, I think that accuracy is the most important, and then fluency. I would like to contact with you to improve my english writing and listerning skill . I hope that you dcan help me having a opportunity to perform my dream. Thank for you help. Kim

Miguel Andrés, Perú.
I think that every student of any languaje aim to both fluency and accuracy and at this way It will sound natural. Everything you do must be natural even when you are laughing isn't it?. Is by that both are important.

Victor Bombieri, Brazil
About the standard vs. non-standard language issue, what I have to say is that I would expect to learn standard language from teachers, however 'unnatural' it might sound, especially as most students are there to learn english for professional or academic reasons. Learning what is acceptable is a natural process, as we are all exposed to a lot of films, music, chatting with friends, etc, and we will eventually pick up what is acceptable for these contexts without necessarily being taught. Of course, I have no prejudice against non-standard language and I wouldn't like to sound "posh" in a conversation either, but I would rely on my capacity of just inferring what is acceptable from context and would expect a more formal education at school. Portuguese is a diglossic language, with huge variations between formal language, used in more formal contexts, and colloquial language, used in every-day speech, and I speak non-standard Portuguese all the time, so I am very much aware of how odd one may sound by insisting on sticking to grammar rules when speaking, but anyway I think school is a good opportunity, sometimes one of the few opportunities, we have to familiarize with "proper" language, even if we choose not to use it all the time. What's more, talking posh just might come in handy some time...

For me, both are very important.I find the topics raised in the programme very useful, as it use to be with this marvellous website.

Luciano, Brazil
Well!!!! That's a good question. I've been learning English by myself for a long time, but in my opinion both topics are important, because when we are learning a second languge it's important to be accurate but not forgetting that to have a good fluency is also interesting to sound natural.

Petrini, France
For me it's more important to be fluent. But for that, I must speak more than to read, or write. So your programm is as important as to be fluent. We must have good bases.

Alfredo, Colombia
Fluency Vs Accuracy that is the question.... Personally I think both of them are really important, you can have a good fluency and speak very fast but if your pronounce and accuracy are not good neither will understand what are you try to said and if you put all your efforts trying to be accuracy you could sound so boring an uninteresting person.

Marzena, Poland
To my mind, the whole program was very interesting. Of course, personally I would like to be both fluent and accurate, ad maybe with even more emphasis on fluency. This is because the first and primary role of a language is communication. You may find similar linguistic issues in each language - I mean whether to acknowledge a particular form of a language the only acceptable one, even if the majority of people speak differently (incorrectly). I think teachers should inform their students about grammatical "varieties", yet the goal of a lesson should be to know proper forms of the language, and the choice of inappropriate forms to use in certain circumstances must be compatible with one's good fluency. What is acceptable in a native speaker or someone who has a nearly-native speaker fluency, may sound artificial in someone who has problems with expressing one's thoughts.

Justeezhia, India
For me both are important. If a person can speak fluent but not accurate in language may be her/his country people can understand them but it will be difficult for others especially foreigners who is a native english speaker.I want to be perfect in all level of english so i give same importance to fluency and accuracy

Abbood, Libya
In my opinion i think both of them are very important ,because as we want to speak fluently we most use it correctly either .

Melody, China
I think it is important for teachers to teach us correct grammatical language. In real life, although you know the meaning from the context because you learn the correct one,we need to learn natural yet right language.

Saber, Afghanistan
What I think for a biginner student, it is not properiate to think about Fluency & Accuracy but when he becomes senior or being in upper-intermediate level, he should be quite rigid about accuracy & fluency as I am one of this clause.

Rolands
I think, topics in this programme are very interesting, and in my opinion need more different topics.. because that make students more more interested in english, it will be more intersting.. :)And I Love BBC Learning.. :) its important for me, because, I not good understund english, and I have this spring english exam.. :)

Maggie, China
This is a very interesting topic. Only days ago I read an article from BEC with the subject of "IS your English too English?".There are a few ponits that the articel mentioned, it says different language also have their own approach to dialogue. The British start with idiomatic expressions such as,So,Should we get down to it ? and understate important issues with phases such as There could be a slight problem. They also say That's a good idea,but...when they mean No and they repeatedly use the word get with different meanings.sometimes they may use humour which is so culture-specific that no one understands it. Base on all these points, I would say the fluency is more important to me.Letting people know what you meant. Simplify it ,don't over-complicate the message, reduce what you are saying to manageable chunks. Thank you BBC program again for giving me a chace to add comments.

Zolkepli, Malaysia
I think fluency is more important to me. I don't want to be in a tremble voice when speaking. I wish I spoke English with great fluency.

Cambodia
I prefer accuracy. since languages has been used to communicate, meaning is really important for sucessful communication.Grammatically correct speaking needs accuracy to expression someone's real meaning. Plese don't mind my grammartical mistakes.

Jesus, Brazil
the topics raised in the programme is very important to me, because I'm studing english through four years, and I need improve my english, therefore, I think the fluency is more important to me.

Monica, Brazil
As I always learned English in formal contexts like school and through books I ended up focusing more on accuracy. Though,I feel that fluency plays vital important role as far speaking is concerned.Fluency gives spice to the speech. I wish I had had some contact with street English to sound more natural.Living some time abroad does make a huge difference! As, at the moment, I can't do that, I content myself with listening to your programme, BBC radio, films and songs in an attempt to absorb this nice natural way of speaking. So thanks for your help. Cheerio

John, Maastricht, Holland.
I think both are quite important. In the past, I was interested in accuracy while speaking, but later I realised that it was really harmful during some specific situations like job interviews to neglect fluency.. Because in such circumstances, you not only need to be accurate and produce relevant ideas, but you also have to use a standard language, with superb grammar and other sublime language rules nearly like a native speaker does.. Otherwise, you overtly take a risk to be eliminated of the job opportunity selection process.

Isaura, Mexico
Hello. I consider both accuracy and fluency are very important moreover while you are in a bussines meeting or speaking in a public presentation. But the language is countinually changing and examples like "I wish I was taller" are more more common nowadays. Maybe is not grammatically correct at present but in the future may be the new rule. Who knows. Greetings =)
