The importance of reading, in and out of school, and how to help children to read
 The challenge
Poor reading skills are common in many countries. Children may not have developed effective reading skills even after seven years of primary education.

"In Zambia we have a very innovative policy where reading and writing is introduced to Grade 1s in a language that is familiar to the children." Geoff Tambulakani, educator, Zambia

 Some solutions
Teach children to read in their first or home language. They can then learn later to read in English. Encourage them to read everything they can - not just text books, but signs and notices.

"If you know your first language well, you can then transfer these skills to a second language." Dr. Rajni Badlani, educator, India

 What teachers have said
Don't worry if children don't understand everything at first.

"We are not very worried when the child cannot comprehend the word he's decoding. Later, when the child recognises the word and can use it in a sentence, then they are able to comprehend whatever they read." Janet Penny, teacher, Ghana
