Multi-grade classes

Teaching children of different ages and different levels in the same class
 The challenge
How can a teacher cater for the needs of different ages and levels in the same lesson?

"Plan lessons in a developmental way so that all the learners do one thing but at different levels." Paulina Metula, teacher educator, South Africa

 Some solutions
Set learning activities around themes of common interest but increase the level of difficulty according to the needs of the different grades.

"Let's say the activity is a writing task around the theme 'People'. Group the class in phases. Grades 1, 2, 3 as one phase, grades 4, 5,6 as another, and so on. The writing task for grades 1, 2 and 3 starts at a very basic level, 'My family'. This could move on in complexity to the next grades writing an autobiography, and this can be taken a step further by writing biographies." Sue Lake, teacher, South Africa

 What teachers have said
Keep the children stimulated at all times by rotating activities between groups.

"I think the main factor to consider is that children need to be kept stimulated the entire time. It's up to the teacher to be able to teach the skill and thereafter ensure that each grade within that classroom is kept very active to the end of that particular session." Trish O Brien, educator, South Africa
