Group work

How to set up and manage group work
 The challenge
Group work is a useful technique for certain teaching and learning activities. It helps in the management of large classes and also encourages peer interaction. But in order for this to happen group activities need to be well managed.

" The planning is important. That would be my biggest thing, clear planning and clear communication to the learners, what they may do and what they are not allowed to do and the time constraints." Jean Tylie, educator, South Africa

 Some solutions
Planning is essential and should include: the aims and objectives of the activity, simple instructions that children will need to be able to do the activity, the roles and tasks of members within each group as well as the size of each group and where and how you will place them.

"If the teacher gives clear instructions then the pupils will know exactly what is expected of them." Dr George Kankam, lecturer, Ghana

 What teachers have said
Decide on the size of each group. The size of a group will vary according to the number of children in the classroom and the activity.

"It's perfectly possible. I simply ask two students in front to turn and face the two students behind them or I just have the students form groups with students sitting around them." Bernie Govender, teacher, South Africa
