Large Classes

Helping children to work with and learn from each other in large classes
 The challenge
Large classes are a reality in many countries. Primary classes of fifty, sixty, even a hundred children are common in many schools. How can teachers make the best of their teaching situation?

" In large classes we cannot give individual attention to all the children So what I usually do is divide the class into groups with one monitor per group - a leader who is capable of explaining the task." Rohini Michigan, teacher, India

 Some solutions
Group leaders or monitors can also help to mark registers, collect and give out books, as well as help maintain discipline.

"They must know that they have to work quietly. They may talk but not loudly. When they finish, they must take out a book and read. They must not be idle." Jean Tylie, educator, South Africa

 What teachers have said
Teachers need to encourage grouping the children and peer teaching - where the children help each other.

"Group leaders I appoint are responsible and are able to control members within their groups." Ponstance Jennifer, teacher, Ghana
