An historic wooden canal boat, which sank ten years ago, is to be restored by schoolchildren in Oxfordshire. Listen to this report from Oxford: The project is being run by Tooley's Boatyard, which has operated by the Oxford canal since 1790 and is part of Banbury Museum. The 1936 cargo-carrying "butty" boat will have its timbers preserved using traditional tools and techniques. Matt Armitage, who runs the yard, said they had applied for Lottery funding for the project. He told BBC News that they will restore it using 200-year-old techniques, steam-bending the planks and using all their old tools. All the metal parts will be made in their forge. And they would like to get all the schools involved and do demonstrations and courses on all the skills. run by has operated by cargo-carrying butty timbers tools techniques applied for steam-bending the planks forge | LATEST STORIES 27 May, 2011 Destruction of smallpox virus delayed 25 May, 2011 Micro-finance 'misused and abused' 20 May, 2011 Lonely planets 18 May, 2011 Germany to invest in more electric cars 16 May, 2011 Argentina builds a tower of books Other Stories | |||||||||||
