The Japanese electronics group, Sony, is delaying the launch of its computer games machine, the Playstation 3, by six months. Sony blames technical problems, but analysts say the delay could be bad for the company. Here's our business reporter Mark Gregory. The Playstation 3 is hugely important for the future of Sony, which has a seventy percent of the multi-billion dollar global market for computer games consoles. The next generation of Playstation will do more than play games. It will also be able to show DVDs and download videos from the internet. But Sony has had to put back the launch by six months to next November. It blames delays in developing industry-wide standards for the Blue-ray disc drive. This is a new technology for playing a more advanced sort of DVD. Playstations will have one built in. The company also cites delays in other areas of technology. But Sony says the product will be out in time for Christmas, the key selling season. Even so, some analysts say the hold-up will hand a competitive advantage to Sony's arch rival Microsoft which already has a new generation games machine, the X-Box 360, on sale. The Japanese electronics giant desperately needs the Playstation 3 to be successful. global market next generation download videos put back the launch blames delays industry-wide standards advanced built in analysts a competitive advantage | LATEST STORIES 27 May, 2011 Destruction of smallpox virus delayed 25 May, 2011 Micro-finance 'misused and abused' 20 May, 2011 Lonely planets 18 May, 2011 Germany to invest in more electric cars 16 May, 2011 Argentina builds a tower of books Other Stories | |||||||||||
