Israeli Elections - immediate responses

NEWS 1 A major consideration now should be to put the country back in unity, to bridge gapsbetween left and right, between religious and unreligious, and between the different sectors of ethnic groups in the country. It is going to be tough. It is very easy, on the one hand, to just give in very quickly and be just loved by Clinton, by Britain, by France, by everybody. But if we really wish to have your peace it means tough negotiations and standing on our security interests.(Uzi Landau)
WORDS

major consideration: a formal choice of language meaning 'important things to think about'

bridge the gaps: an informal way of expressing a method of achieving unity

religious and unreligious: notice how the opposite adjective is achieved here by the prefix 'un'

on the one hand...but: Mr Landau uses this structure to indicate that opposing views are about to be expressed

by Clinton, by Britain by France, by everybody: Mr Landau uses a rhetorical device - a list - to stress his point

NEWS 2 First I hope that he will stop all these activities, unilateral activities concerning the permanent status of negotiations, stop building settlements, stopconfiscating land and changing the reality in Jerusalem. (Fisal Husseini)
WORDS

stop: Mr Husseini repeats the word 'stop' three times for emphasis

unilateral: an unilateral decision is carried out by only one of the groups involved

confiscating: if you confiscate something from someone you take it away from them

NEWS 3  It's not an earthquake, it's a sunrise. We're certainly going to accelerate towards peace and recovery from the terrible three years of Netanyahu and we've got a lot of catching up to do. (Yael Dayan)
WORDS

earthquake...sunrise: notice here Ms. Dayan's optimistic comparison

catching up: here, extra work must be done to re-establish the pace of the negotiations
