| | | Ernesto Che Guevara was quite used to being photographed. He was one of the great romantic heroes of the twentieth century, an adventurer, a revolutionary and after his death in 1967 while trying to foment revolution in Bolivia, a symbol of revolution on millions of t-shirts and walls of student homes. While being photographed he was also taking pictures. Many of those pictures have now gone on display in the Morro-Cabana fortress overlooking Havana Bay. It was in that same fortress that Che Guevara had his office in the years after the triumph of the Cuban revolution in 1959.
Despite his busy schedule he always took time to record his travels. His self portraits are perhaps the most stunning. A fresh faced innocent student leaving Argentina in 1951. A more hardened but still idealistic man in Tanzania in 1965.
Che Guevara's collections of photographs are perhaps not great art but they provide an interesting record of one of the most dramatic lives of recent times.
