| | | US rapper shot dead in New York
A member of US rap legends Run-DMC has been shot dead in a recording studio in New York. Run-DMC are thought of as one of the most important bands in the history of hip-hop because they took the style of music from the underground to the charts. They are best known for the track Walk This Way when they teamed up with rock band Aerosmith and It's Like That, which went to number one in the UK in 1998. Run-DMC also made the first rap record ever to go platinum - Raising Hell in 1986 and were the first rap band to be on the cover of US rock magazine Rolling Stone.
Jam Master Jay - whose real name was Jason Mizell - was the DJ in the group with Run (Joseph Simmons), and DMC (Darryl McDaniels). When they heard the news loads of Jam Master Jay's friends - including Public Enemy's Chuck D and producer Dr Dre - went to the studio where the shooting happened.
