Re-fuelling Bujumbura

Women sort the waste outside Bujumbura

It is mostly women who sort the domestic waste for the recycling project.

sorted waste

Once sorted the domestic refuse is dried before it is ground.

compressing the ground waste

The ground waste is passed through a machine which compresses it into compact round bricks.

stove

The new combustible will replace wood charcoal in families' cooking stoves.

A business venture which is proving to be top-of-the-heap in the Burundian capital, Bujumbura was started by a group of ex-rebels and ex-soldiers who simply wanted something to earn a living.

The waste-recycling initiative is producing a cleaner city and also relieving the pressure on trees because it offers an alternative fuel to the wood charcoal or wood logs which families use for cooking.

Prime Ndikumagenge has been looking into the project and put together this report.
