Presidential favourites Joseph Kabila and Jean-Pierre Bemba
On Sunday 30th July 2006, the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo voted in their first free election in more than 40 years.

For the successful candidate - the presidency - and with it a chance to unite the different groups that make up the Congolese electorate.

Our coverage

The BBC World Service's African programmes provided comprehensive coverage of the last days of campaigning and of the entire election process.

Hassan Arouni spoke to Jean-Pierre Bemba about why he wants the top job?

The favourite in the race however, was the incumbent ruler, President Joseph Kabila. Mark Doyle asked him if he'd accept the vote result whatever the outcome?
