Sudan's ruling National Congress Party (NCP) has said it will not field a candidate against Salva Kiir, head of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM).
President Bashir's NCP says it will instead back the southern leader for president of the semi-autonomous south in April's elections.
The NCP has proposed that the SPLM reciprocate by withdrawing its contender against President Omar al-Bashir in national presidential elections.
Focus on Africa's Paul Bakibinga asked Ezekiel Gatkout, head of the Government of South Sudan's mission to the United States, what they made of the NCP's decision.
