In Nigeria, the Vice President, Goodluck Jonathan, has addressed the nation for the first time since taking effective power of the country.

In his televised speech he said he had ordered the army to take over security in the Central city of Jos, where over four hundred and fifty people have been killed this week in clashes between Muslims and Christians.

The BBC's Fidelis Mbah in Lagos watched the televised speech.
