This weekend Commonwealth Heads of States meet on the Carribean islands of Trinidad and Tobago, and one of the issues on the agenda is Rwanda's application for membership.

The organisation brings together mainly former British colonies but Rwanda has no such ties.

Moreover, the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative recently issued a damning report on Rwanda expressing deep reservations over the country's human rights record and the level of political freedom.

The BBC's Joseph Warungu has been debating this with the Commonwealth Secretary General, Kamalesh Sharma.
