A new wave of hundreds of refugees from Eritrea are crossing into Sudan every month, according to the UNHCR.

It's a twist of irony as Sudan itself has seen several thousands of its own refugees fleeing the conflict in Darfur or Southern Sudan into neighbouring countries.

The UNHCR says about eighteen hundred Eritreans are arriving in Sudan every month, hoping to make their way to Europe; they say they're fleeing repression and harsh conditions of military service back home.

Most of them are arriving in and around the eastern town of Kassala.

Our correspondent James Copnall is in the town; he has been visiting refugee camps with the UNHCR.

He explained the situation to Akwasi Sarpong.
