"There is a high threat from terrorism" - that's the advice from Britain's Foreign Office for anyone thinking of travelling to northern Mali.

The British government says that there is a real danger the security situation there could deteriorate.

The advisory is quite specific about places that should be avoided by its nationals, including Timbuktu which is home to a UNESCO world heritage centre.

Earlier this year a group of European tourists were kidnapped along the Mali-Niger border. A British tourist - who was part of the group- was killed in June.
