Veteran politician John Tembo of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) was outmanoeuvred yesterday from his position as leader of the opposition on a technicality.

The standing orders and procedure for electing an opposition leader were changed giving all members of parliament a say in who occupies the position.

The parliament voted overwhelmingly for Ephraim Kayembe, who is fairly new in politics, and viewed as sympathetic to the ruling party.

BBC Focus on Africa's Sophie Ikenye spoke to the deposed opposition leader Mr. Tembo.

Plus reaction from Chris Banda, a member of the MCP who says they wanted him out.
