The United Nations food summit in Rome has adopted a declaration committing the world to what it calls a new partnership to combat hunger.

Nearly two hundred countries have pledged to help developing countries lessen their dependence on foreign food aid.

Jacques Diouf, the head of the UN's Food and Agricultural Organisation, said he was not satisfied because the pledge did not include targets either for the amount of spending on agriculture or a date to eradicate hunger in the world.
