The humanitarian problems arising from continued military action in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo is a cause for deep concern, according to the UN Security Council meeting last night.

Government forces backed by the UN peacekeeping mission, Monuc have been trying to crush the Hutu militia, the FDLR, and other local armed groups for the past eight months.

A local Mai-Mai militia says it is defending its land.
