The global economic crisis could lead to political instability, or even war, in Africa if western donors renege on promises of development aid to the continent.

This was a scenario discussed at a meeting of former heads of state which ended in the Ghanaian capital, Accra, last night.

The group, known as Club Madrid, is made up of over 70 retired heads of state from around the world.

It includes former presidents John Agyekum Kufuor, Festus Mogai, Olusegun Obasanjo and Benjamin Mkapa of Tanzania, who has recently been promoted to Club Madrid's board of directors.

David Amanor, our reporter in Accra, asked Mr Mkapa to explain the club's concerns.
