Talks between Guinea's ruling military junta and the Forces Vives, an umbrella opposition grouping of political parties, civil society activists and trade union groups are starting today in Ouagadougou under the mediation of Burkinabe president, Blaize Compaore.

The regional grouping ECOWAS appointed President Compaore as mediator, after the political crisis that followed the killing of scores of demonstrators by security forces at the country's main football stadium in September.

However, on the eve of the talks, the leader of the ruling military junta was steadfast. Joseph Warungu compiled this report
