In major African cities, journeys that should take half an hour can sometimes take you up to three.

These are the perennial problems which face many Africans on our roads.

But why do such traffic problems occur and does travelling from one place to another always have to be a nightmare?

BBC Network Africa has started a week long series of reports on the jams clogging the streets of our continent's capital cities.

First to Cairo and Ranyah Sabry has this report.
