A senior United Nations official has been stopped from entering Zimbabwe, despite being invited to visit the prime minister there, Morgan Tsvangirai.

Manfred Nowak, who's the UN special rapporteur on torture, arrived at Harare airport last night but he was told that he wouldn't be allowed to enter the country.

He was informed that a meeting organised by the regional grouping SADC to resolve the political impasse in Zimbabwe meant his fact finding trip would have to be cancelled.

Mr Nowak spoke to the BBC's World Today programme from the Harare airport where he is being kept.
