Its patience has run out and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has suspended Niger.

The move follows the refusal of president Mamadou Tandja to stop parliamentary elections from taking place yesterday.

Mr Tandja dissolved the previous parliament, because it refused to extend his term in office.
