The droughts which are devastating parts of east Africa are now threatening the opposite side of the continent.
A red alert has been issued in Nigeria by the National Emergency Management Agency, which says eleven states in the north of the country are at risk of drought.
This will be nothing new to farmers in Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, or Adamawa, who suffered greatly from severe droughts in the past.
But how bad is the situation now?
Akwasi Sarpong put that question to Alhassan Nuhu, Deputy Director of Forecasting for the Agency.
