South Africa's president, Jacob Zuma, has come out in support of changing the law to give police greater leeway in confronting violent and dangerous criminals.
President Zuma was in Pretoria, addressing more than a thousand police commissioners from all over the country, in an effort to boost the morale of the police.
Speaking just a week after the release of the annual crime statistics which showed that house robberies and sexually related crimes had risen steeply, President Zuma warned that lots of hard work was needed to make South Africa a safer place.
