Good news for HIV/AIDS vaccine research

There are hopes today of progress towards finding a vaccine against HIV/AIDS, after a trial programme in Thailand appeared to reduce infection rates by more than 30%.

It is the first time a vaccine has been shown to give even this limited protection against the virus that causes AIDS.

So how big a breakthrough is this? And how does it relate to other vaccine research going on in Africa?

Peter Ndoro asked Dr Saladin Osmanov, co-ordiantor of the World Health Organisation UN AIDS Vaccine programmes.
