The United Nations 64th General Assembly opens today at its headquarters in New York.

Scores of countries have sent delegates to discuss issues ranging from the millennium development goals, and the current world economic downturn to the hot topic of the moment - climate change.

Also on the agenda will be tackling conflicts and disease in Africa.

And some well known African leaders will be making their debut at this year's summit.

The BBC' Bessan Vikou reports.
