Somalia's capital Mogadishu was earlier today rocked by explosions at the base of the African Union peacekeepers.

At least nine peacekeepers are reported to have been killed, among them the Burundian deputy commander.

The islamist militant group, al-Shabab, have already claimed responsibility for the attacks, which were carried out by suicide bombers.

The violence comes after the group vowed to avenge a US raid in southern Somalia earlier this week, which is reported to have killed an al-Qaeda suspect.

AU peacekeepers have been helping to shore up the beleaguered Transitional Federal Government.

Focus on Africa's reporter in Mogadishu, Mohammed Olad Hassan, spoke to Paul Bakibinga.
